History & Architecture of Amber Fort

Amber Fort was built in 1592 by Raja Man Singh I, one of Emperor Akbar's most trusted generals. Constructed from red sandstone and marble, the fort served as the capital of the Kachwaha Rajputs for over 150 years before the capital shifted to Jaipur.

The fort's architecture is a stunning fusion of Mughal and Rajput styles, featuring large ramparts, series of gates and cobbled paths, and beautifully carved pillars. The fort complex consists of four main courtyards, each with its own entrance and palace.

Architectural Highlights

  • Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace): Thousands of tiny mirrors create magical reflections
  • Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of Public Audience): Where the king met common people
  • Diwan-i-Khas (Hall of Private Audience): Exquisite inlay work and alabaster panels
  • Sukh Niwas: Palace with ingenious air conditioning system using water channels
  • Ganesh Pol: Beautifully decorated gateway

What Makes Amber Fort Special

Amber Fort's unique location on a hilltop, surrounded by fortified walls extending over the hills, creates a spectacular sight. The fort is renowned for its artistic Hindu-style elements and large ramparts, cobbled paths, and series of gates and stepped wells.

Elephant Rides at Amber Fort

The elephant ride from the base to the fort entrance is one of the most iconic experiences at Amber Fort. Decorated elephants carry visitors up the steep path to the Sun Gate (Suraj Pol), recreating the royal experience of Rajput kings.

Important Note: Due to animal welfare concerns, elephant rides are now limited and may have restrictions. Our tour guides can help arrange ethical alternatives like jeep rides.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal time to visit Amber Fort is from October to March when temperatures are pleasant. Visit early morning (8-10 AM) to avoid crowds and heat, especially if you plan the elephant ride.
